Catcher in the Rye: Phoebe
Holden’s love for Phoebe is demonstrated throughout the novel, and she is one of the few people Holden doesn’t criticize. Holden especially liked kids and in the novel, he never called a kid “phony.” When he saw the “fuck you” signs on the school wall, he immediately accused anybody except for children. He thought that children would never write that, and thought that they were pure. Holden enjoyed listening to Phoebe talking about random things and liked her for her innocence. When he watched Phoebe sleeping, he says, “You take adults, they look lousy when they’re asleep and they have their mouths way open, but kids don’t. Kids look all right.” (159) Holden seemed to dislike adults and thought they were evil. Although kids also had spit all over their pillow, Holden thought that it was okay for kids. Phoebe was always an exception for him. Also, he enjoyed talking to Phoebe about anything because she always listened to him. Phoebe didn’t judge Holden for anything, and understood everything he said. Although Phoebe is child-like, she was also mature at times. When Holden was about to leave, Phoebe gave him her money even though it was her “Christmas dough.” Also, when Holden was about to leave, she wanted to leave with him to take care of him. Phoebe was probably the reason why Holden didn’t leave New York. In the last scene, Holden takes Phoebe to ride the carrousel. This scene had significance because the carrousel represented something that would never change. He watched Phoebe ride it, and started to cry. He was touched by her child-like innocence. Phoebe was exactly the sort of child he wanted to “catch in the rye.” Phoebe was also the only one that knew about Holden’s dream of wanting to be a catcher in the rye. This shows the trust he had in Phoebe.

I agree with you on how Phoebe is a special person to Holden. He treats her very differently from others. This is probably because he loves innocent kids in general and loves Phoebe for truly caring about him. When most people, including his parents, don't seem to notice his loneliness, Phoebe knows his true feelings deep down and thus tries to run away with Holden. This shows the tight relationship between the two. What I want to add on your post is that he not only wanted to be a "catcher" for children who were as innocent as Phoebe but also kids who were almost in a danger of "falling down." What I can see from his behaviors toward Phoebe are the lonesomeness in his life and the desperateness for companions. Yes, he does claim that he would be the catcher in the rye but he's the one who actually needs help, and Phoebe seems to be the catcher in his life. (162 words)
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that Holden doesn't criticize Phoebe and I think it's because Phoebe is the only one who is left for Holden and that he respects her a lot because she would listen to everything he says. I believe that the kids didn't write the words "f**k you" on the school walls because they were innocent. I think Holden wrote those words because when he was young, he might have had a bad relationship with his parents or maybe he was an unsociable person that time and stayed lonely. Phoebe was being a part of Holden's life by caring for him all the time. She shows this feeling by lending Holden her "Christmas dough" and wanting to leave with Holden. I also agree with you that the carrousel was significant. It represents his life as it goes around and around and nothing changes.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you when you mentioned Phoebe is an exception on everyone else he calls a phony, or dislikes. I find that any of his siblings are people he will never judge and think bad of. I could kind of see that Phoebe was being the “Older” sibling when she was giving Holden her money and sort of lecturing Holden on his life. I also agree with what you said was the reason Holden didn’t leave New York. I’m guessing since his brother Allie had died, his only source of motivation and maybe even inspiration came from Phoebe his own little sister.
